What it means for your site

  • If your traffic dipped around 9 Oct, check Search Console for the days either side before changing anything. Movement on rough days often settles by itself.
  • Google confirmed the September 2026 spam update this month. Judge its effect on your pages a week after Google marks it finished, not while it rolls out.
  • Calm days, like 16 Oct, are the best time to judge a change you made: compare the week after it with the week before, not with the rough days.

How the reading works

200 searches across everyday topics, on Google in English for the United States, always from New York, checked at 06:00 UTC every day. For each search we compare today’s top 10 results, the first page, with yesterday’s and score the change; the day’s reading is the average, on a scale of 0 to 10. Owlcast needs 30 days to know what a normal day looks like before it calls a day calm or stormy.
